4 Ways To Make Your Next Pizza A Little Healthier

It is estimated that around three billion pizzas are served each year in the United States, making pizza a very popular option for lunch and dinner. However, pizza is not always the healthiest dinner option. The good news, though, is that pizza can easily become a healthier meal option just by changing up the toppings on the pizza.

#1: Change Up the Pizza Crust

The first thing you can do is go with a different pizza crust. Instead of going with a regular pizza crust, try going with a whole wheat pizza crust so that you get more nutrients out of your pizza crust. Or see if your favorite pizza place offers any low-carb pizza crust options. You can also go for thin-crust pizza instead of a thick-crust pizza, reducing the amount of crust that you eat.

#2: Cut the Salami, Bacon, and Pepperoni

Second, you need to stop eating meat that is not good for you and is high in fat. Salami, bacon, and pepperoni are all really high in fat and are not good topping choices if you are looking to build a healthier pizza.

If you really must have meat on your pizza, go for ham or chicken. One of the great things about putting chicken on your pizza is that there are lots of flavor combinations you can try, from buffalo chicken to barbeque chicken to mala chicken. You can also go with ham, which is not as high in fat as bacon.

#3: Embrace the Veggies

Veggies on your pizza can be delicious. Consider trying out an all-vegetarian pizza combination. With a vegetarian pizza, you don't have to pile on every vegetable you can think of.

For example, you can choose pineapple, onions, and black olives for a Hawaiian style-pizza. Or you can enjoy some spinach, mushrooms, onions, and alfredo-style sauce for a veggie Alfredo pizza. Or you can do a Mexican-style pizza with tomatoes, jalapenos, green pepper, mild peppers, and onions.

There are lots of fun ways to put vegetables together to create just as many different types of pizza as you can with meat toppings. The plus side is less fat on your pizza, and you get to get in your veggies all at once.

#4: Go Light on the Cheese

Pizza may be all about the cheese, but your pizza doesn't have to be dripping cheese to be tasty. Ask the pizza place if they have low-fat mozzarella you can choose as the cheese or ask if they can reduce the amount of cheese you put on the pizza.

If you want to enjoy a healthier pizza, go for a whole wheat crust, cut back on high-fat meats, embrace your veggies, and go light on the cheese. Making one or all of these modifications to your pizza will help make enjoying a slice of pizza a healthier option.
