Four Unique Pizza Topping Combinations To Try

Posted on: 27 May 2018

Pizza is delicious, but at some point, you have to grow tired of cheese and pepperoni. It's fun to experiment with unique topping combinations, but if you're not overly adventurous when it comes to food, you may not even know where to start. Here are four unique pizza topping combinations to try as you start expanding your horizons.

1. Cheddar, Onion, and Broccoli

If you don't want to get too crazy, try this combination, which has the added bonus of working in a serving of vegetables. It's best if you have a really sharp cheddar, perhaps mixed half-and-half with some mozzarella for stringiness. Sweet onions, which are sauteed before being placed on the pizza, have a bold flavor that stands up well to that of the cheddar.

2. Fig and Goat Cheese

If you'd like to try something on the sweeter side, consider combining figs and goat cheese on top of your pizza. Goat cheese has a lovely, creamy texture that is perfect when paired with sweet, slightly tangy figs. You can give this combination even more character by drizzling the pizza with a little honey after it comes out of the oven. This combination is especially delicious when prepared on a whole wheat crust. The nuttiness of the whole wheat is exceptional when combined with the sweet figs.

3. Mushroom, Asiago, and Sausage

For meat and protein lovers, this is the pizza topping combination to beat them all. The mushrooms have a meaty, chewy texture and are high in protein, and the sausage adds some saltiness. Asiago cheese has a pungent flavor, but it is not overly gooey. So, you may want to include a little mozzarella if you really crave that stringy, stretchy cheese texture.

4. Pineapple, Ham, and Barbecue Sauce

This is a somewhat classic combination that some people refer to as Hawaiian pizza. You use the barbecue sauce in place of the red sauce you would typically use on pizza. Canned pineapple is delicious, although fresh is even better. Sliced deli ham is the perfect choice, and you can substitute bacon if you're feeling adventurous.

Each of these pizza topping combinations suits a somewhat different palate. A good way to try them all would be to invite a few friends over and order a couple of different pizzas. You could each try a slice of all four pizzas and then compare to see which pizza everyone likes best. Contact a restaurant, like Scittino's Italian Market Place, to find out your options.
