Seafood Dining: The Best Options For Your Waistline

Posted on: 21 February 2017

Seafood has a reputation for being healthy, but not all seafood dishes are equally healthy. There are some dishes that are simply better for those who are trying to lose weight. Some types of fish are healthier, and how the fish is cooked also plays a large role in how healthy it is.

Beware Of Add-Ons

While fish is healthy by itself, there are some things that can be added to fish that will make it less healthy. A common condiment added to fish that you should think twice about is tartar sauce. This is an ingredient that adds more calories to your meal. The only time you should consider having some tartar sauce is if you are less likely to eat fish without it.

The Leanest Fish

There are so many types of fish and it can sometimes be difficult to tell apart the type of fish you are having, especially if a restaurant you are visiting is not clear what type of fish it is. Always ask. Some of the leanest fish available include:

  • Halibut
  • Oysters
  • Salmon
  • Scallops
  • Canned tuna

Fortunately many of these options are very different, so it is easy to eat lean fish even if you do not like some of these options.

How The Fish Is Cooked

How you cook fish also plays an important role in how healthy it is. Grilled fish is one of the healthiest options. The greatest part about grilled fish is that it does not take as long to prepare as other methods. Broiling fish is also great if you do not want to wait too long for your fish.

If you are concerned about keeping your fish moist and would like to maintain the delicate flavor, another option is to have your fish poached. If the fish is poached in a broth of herbs and spices, this will make the flavor more complex. If you choose to have your fish steamed, it will be healthy. However, you might be tempted to have the fish combined with a sauce because steamed fish can be very mild.

Baked fish can be very healthy, but it can also take longer to cook than other options. There are some ingredients that are more likely to be added to baked fish that could make it less healthy, such as mayonnaise, cheese or butter oil. But regardless of how your fish is prepared, you will likely be healthier than if you eat other meat options. Keep these ideas in mind next time you visit a seafood restaurant.
